Peach Moonstone

Orthoclase var. Moonstone (Feldspar variety) · Semi-Precious Gemstone

Peach Moonstone

Crystal System

Monoclinic; typically occurs in massive or tumbled form rather than distinct large crystals in gem grade.

Mineral Group

Silicates; Tectosilicate (Feldspar Group)

Chemical Formula

(K,Na)AlSi3O8 (Potassium Aluminum Silicate)

Formation Process

Igneous/Metamorphic: Forms from cooling magma in pegmatites where slow cooling allows for the exsolution of orthoclase and albite layers.

About This Crystal

A warm, peachy-tan to orange-brown stone with a soft, vitreous to pearly luster. This tumbled specimen shows a semi-translucent body with internal white bands and a dark, possibly chlorite or tourmaline, vein-like inclusion.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Peach to salmon-pink; Streak: White; Cleavage: Perfect in two directions at 90 degrees; Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven; Specific Gravity: 2.56-2.59; Fluorescence: Weak orange or blue under UV.

Optical Properties

Displays adularescence (a soft floating glow caused by light scattering between microscopic layers of orthoclase and albite). Refractive Index: 1.518-1.526.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Primarily Madagascar, India, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. Found in pegmatite and metamorphic deposits.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 6.0 to 6.5. Fair toughness; vulnerable to pressure or hard knocks due to perfect cleavage.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and harsh chemicals. Store separately from harder stones like quartz or sapphire to prevent scratching.

Rarity & Value

Relatively common; value is determined by the strength of the adularescence, color saturation, and clarity. Carved or high-glow pieces command higher prices.

Special Characteristics

Adularescence (the 'moonlight' glow effect) and occasional chatoyancy. This specific piece features a prominent dark linear inclusion, adding unique character.

Lore & History

Historically linked to the moon and feminine energy in many cultures. In modern crystal healing, it is associated with the Sacral and Heart chakras, thought to support emotional balance, creativity, and soothing stress.
