Kambaba Jasper
Stromatolite (Fossilized Algae) · Decorative Stone / Fossil Specimen

Crystal System
Trigonal/Microcrystalline; typically occurs in massive or spheroidal habits with orbicular patterns.
Mineral Group
Silicates (Tectosilicate variety of Chalcedony)
Chemical Formula
SiO2 (Microcrystalline Quartz) with organic inclusions and Fe, Mg, Ca silicates
Formation Process
Sedimentary/Biogenic; formed through the fossilization of ancient cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) structures known as stromatolites under low-temperature, high-silica conditions.
About This Crystal
An opaque stone featuring a dark green to black base with distinctive circular or orbicular swirling patterns of brighter forest green. It displays a waxy to vitreous luster when polished, often containing small quartz-filled cavities.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Dark green, black, and olive. Streak: White. Cleavage: None. Fracture: Conchoidal. Specific Gravity: 2.63-2.65. Lacks magnetism and piezoelectricity. Typically non-fluorescent.
Optical Properties
Opaque; refractive index approximately 1.54 (aggregate). No pleochroism or dispersion due to opacity. Light reflection is diffuse across the polished surface.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Primarily the Bongolava region of Madagascar; found in sedimentary environments.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 6.5 - 7. Good toughness and durability; excellent for jewelry and carving due to its lack of cleavage and stable structure.
Care & Maintenance
Safe to clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners and ultrasonic cleaners if the stone has surface-reaching fractures. Store separately from harder gemstones like sapphires or diamonds.
Rarity & Value
Common; relatively inexpensive and widely available. Value is determined by the clarity and contrast of the orbicular 'eye' patterns and the quality of the polish.
Special Characteristics
Orbicular (eye-like) structures that are actually fossilized remains of ancient microbial mats. The distinctive green coloring is attributed to chlorite and other mineral inclusions within the silica matrix.
Lore & History
Historically valued as a stone of peace and stability. In modern metaphysical traditions, it is associated with the Heart and Base Chakras and is believed to provide grounding and a deep connection to the Earth's ancient life cycles.
