Green Aventurine

Quartzite var. Aventurine (Quartz with Fuchsite inclusions) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Mineral Specimen

Green Aventurine

Crystal System

Trigonal/Hexagonal; usually occurs in massive form without visible crystal faces

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 with K(Al,Cr)2(AlSi3O10)(OH)2 inclusions

Formation Process

Metamorphic; forms when quartz-rich sedimentary or igneous rocks undergo heat and pressure, allowing mica inclusions to align

About This Crystal

Translucent to opaque pale to medium green stone with a signature glittering effect (aventurescence) caused by tiny internal plates of green mica (fuchsite). This specimen shows a raw, sugary texture and a matte to vitreous luster.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Mint to forest green; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal to splintery; Specific Gravity: 2.64-2.69; Fluorescence: Usually inert but may show weak reddish glow under LWUV.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.544-1.553; Birefringence: 0.009 (often aggregates); Optical phenomena: Aventurescence (platelet-like reflections)

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

India (major source), Brazil, Russia, and Tanzania; formed in metamorphic environments

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 6.5-7.0; Toughness: Good (no cleavage); generally durable for jewelry and daily wear.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush; avoid ultrasonic cleaners if the stone has surface-reaching fractures; store away from harder stones like Sapphire or Topaz.

Rarity & Value

Common; very affordable. Value is determined by color intensity and the density of the 'aventurescence' glitter. Rarely treated, though some pale specimens may be dyed.

Special Characteristics

Aventurescence: the shimmering effect produced by inclusions of green chrome-mica (fuchsite) that reflect light within the stone.

Lore & History

Historically known as the 'Stone of Opportunity'; used in 18th-century glassmaking to imitate the sparkling look of 'aventura' glass. Traditionally associated with the Heart Chakra and believed to bring luck and prosperity in many cultures.
