Chlorite Phantom Quartz
Quartz (variety Rock Crystal) with inclusions of the Chlorite group · Collector Mineral / Semi-Precious Gemstone

Crystal System
Trigonal; typically prismatic crystals though this specimen is tumble-polished and shows a 'phantom' habit within the host.
Mineral Group
Silicates (Tectosilicate for host Quartz; Phyllosilicate for Chlorite inclusions)
Chemical Formula
SiO2 with inclusions likely (Mg,Fe)3(Si,Al)4O10(OH)2 (Chlorite group)
Formation Process
Hydrothermal. The 'phantom' is formed when quartz growth is interrupted, chlorite settles on the crystal faces, and quartz growth then resumes over the inclusion.
About This Crystal
A polished, transparent to translucent quartz crystal containing dark green, moss-like chlorite inclusions. The inclusions appear as a distinct internal cloud or phantom layer, mimicking the shape of the original crystal faces. The luster is vitreous.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Clear with green inclusions; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal; Specific Gravity: 2.65; Fluorescence: Usually inert.
Optical Properties
Refractive Index: 1.544–1.553; Birefringence: 0.009; Optical Character: Uniaxial positive; Doubly refractive.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Commonly sourced from Minas Gerais, Brazil; the Himalayan mountains (Nepal/India); and the Swiss Alps.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 7 (Quartz host). Very durable for jewelry; resistant to scratches but can fracture along internal inclusion planes if struck.
Care & Maintenance
Safe to clean with warm soapy water. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners or steam if there are internal fractures; store away from harder stones like diamonds.
Rarity & Value
Common to Uncommon. Value depends on the clarity of the phantom and the 'sharpness' of the internal crystal shape. Tumbled stones are generally affordable ($5-$20).
Special Characteristics
Features a 'Phantom' effect where the inclusion outlines a previous growth stage of the crystal; includes moss-like or dendritic chlorite clusters.
Lore & History
Historically used as a 'healer's stone.' In metaphysical lore, it is believed to assist in overcoming stagnation and connecting with Earth's energy (Heart Chakra). It has been found in alpine 'cleft' mining sites for centuries.
