About This Crystal
An elongate, brownish-gray, highly weathered mineral concretion with a rough, earthy texture, pitted surface features, and irregular contours indicating substantial oxidation.
Physical Characteristics
Color ranges from yellowish-brown to dark brown and blackish-brown. Streak is yellowish-brown or brownish-yellow. Cleavage is imperfect in one direction, typically breaks with an uneven or conchoidal fracture. Specific gravity is approximately 2.7 to 4.3 depending on porosity. Tenacity is brittle. Non-magnetic unless containing magnetite inclusions.
Optical Properties
Biaxial negative, highly opaque in massive concretion forms, though microscopic crystals can exhibit strong pleochroism from yellow-brown to dark reddish-brown.
