Blue Lace Agate

Quartz var. Agate (Microcrystalline Chalcedony) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Blue Lace Agate

Crystal System

Trigonal/Monoclinic; Cryptocrystalline (Microscopic crystals), typically occurring in massive, banded, or botryoidal habits.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate group, Quartz family)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide) with trace amounts of Iron and Manganese

Formation Process

Hydrothermal; formed by the deposition of silica from groundwater in the cavities (vesicles) of igneous volcanic rocks.

About This Crystal

A translucent to opaque variety of chalcedony characterized by delicate, wavy bands or 'lacey' patterns of pale blue and white. It features a vitreous to waxy luster and smooth, rounded surfaces when tumbled.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Light blue with white or cream bands; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven; Specific Gravity: 2.58–2.64; Fluorescence: Weak yellowish or greenish under longwave UV.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.530–1.543; Birefringence: Up to 0.004; Pleochroism: None; Dispersion: Low; Optical Character: Uniaxial positive.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Primarily Namibia (Ysterputs mine), with some occurrences in South Africa, Brazil, and India. Often found in volcanic rock cavities.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 6.5–7; Toughness: Very good due to its microcrystalline structure; Stability: Generally stable but sensitive to hydrofluoric acid.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush; avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Store away from harder stones like diamonds or sapphires to prevent scratching.

Rarity & Value

Common to Uncommon; high-quality material specifically from Namibia is increasingly rare. Value is determined by the clarity of the blue hue and the intricacy of the lace patterns.

Special Characteristics

Distinctive banding caused by rhythmic crystallization; may occasionally show 'druzy' quartz inclusions in natural vugs or crevices.

Lore & History

Historically used in amulets for protection; in metaphysical traditions, it is known as a 'stone of communication' associated with the throat chakra and calming emotional distress.
