Iron Meteorite (Widmanstätten / Regmaglypts)
Meteoritic Iron (Kamacite and Taenite alloy) · Meteoritic Material

Crystal System
Cubic (Isometric) for Kamacite/Taenite structures
Mineral Group
Native Elements
Chemical Formula
Fe, Ni with trace Co, Ga, Ge, Ir
Formation Process
Extraterrestrial crystallization from molten metal cores of differentiated asteroids over millions of years, followed by impact events and atmospheric entry.
About This Crystal
Opaque metallic specimen showing fusion crust features, regmaglypts (thumbprint-like indentations formed by atmospheric ablation during entry), and a silvery-gray metallic sheen with micro-pitting.
Physical Characteristics
Color is silvery-gray to dark metallic brown. Streak is metallic gray. Cleavage is none, fracture is hackly or irregular. Specific gravity is very high, around 7.5 to 8.0. Tenacity is sectile and malleable.
Optical Properties
Opaque with a strong metallic luster. Exhibits no refraction, pleochroism, or transparency. Etching with acid reveals internal Widmanstätten patterns.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Extraterrestrial (Asteroid belt origins; found globally including Campo del Cielo Argentina, Canyon Diablo USA, Muonionalusta Sweden)
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness is around 4 to 5. Extremely tough due to the metallic nickel-iron alloy nature, but susceptible to oxidation and rusting if exposed to moisture.
Care & Maintenance
Store in a dry, low-humidity environment with silica gel packets. Apply light mineral oil or Renaissance wax periodically to prevent rust. Avoid water, harsh chemicals, and ultrasonic cleaners.
Rarity & Value
Rare to Very Rare. Value depends on mass, shape, presence of fusion crust, regmaglypts, and provenance. Prices range from modest per-gram rates for common finds to thousands for complete oriented meteorites.
Special Characteristics
Features prominent regmaglypts (thumbprints) created by melting and aerodynamic ablation during high-speed atmospheric descent. May also exhibit Widmanstätten patterns when cut and etched.
Lore & History
Historically revered by ancient cultures (such as the Egyptians and Inuit) who used fallen iron meteorites for tools and weapons before smelting was discovered. Metaphysically associated with grounding star energy, strength, transformation, and cosmic connection.
