Red Jasper

Quartz var. Jasper (Microcrystalline Quartz) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Red Jasper

Crystal System

Trigonal crystal system (Aggregate form); this specimen is carved into a hexagonal prismatic obelisk (tower) shape.

Mineral Group

Silicates; Tectosilicate subgroup (Chalcedony/Quartz group)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide) with Fe2O3 (Iron Oxide) inclusions for color

Formation Process

Sedimentary or Hydrothermal; formed when silica-rich fluids circulate through volcanic rocks or sediments, incorporating iron oxide impurities.

About This Crystal

An opaque, microcrystalline variety of quartz showing a deep brick-red color with dark grey/greenish-black vein-like mineral inclusions. It has a smooth polished surface with a dull to vitreous luster.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Brick red to brownish-red; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven; Specific Gravity: 2.58–2.91; Fluorescence: Typically none.

Optical Properties

Opaque; Refractive Index: approx 1.54; Aggregate polarization; no pleochroism or dispersion effects visible due to opacity.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Brazil, India, South Africa, and the USA. Typically forms in sedimentary or metamorphic environments.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 6.5–7; Toughness: Excellent due to its microcrystalline structure; safe for daily wear and jewelry.

Care & Maintenance

Safe to clean with warm soapy water and soft brush. Avoid harsh chemicals. While quartz is stable, prolonged sun exposure can theoretically fade some impurities, though jasper is generally very stable.

Rarity & Value

Very common; widely available and affordable. Value is determined by patterns, color saturation, and the quality of the lapidary work (polishing and carving).

Special Characteristics

Displays 'brecciated' or veined patterns caused by secondary mineral infiltration (such as hematite or magnetite) into cracks within the jasper.

Lore & History

Historically known as a 'stone of endurance' used by ancient Egyptians in amulets. In traditional folklore, it is associated with the Root Chakra and believed to provide grounding and physical strength.
