Serpentine
Antigorite / Serpentine Subgroup · Decorative Stone and Carving Material

Crystal System
Monoclinic (commonly found in massive, compact, or fibrous habits)
Mineral Group
Silicates (Phyllosilicates)
Chemical Formula
(Mg,Fe)3Si2O5(OH)4
Formation Process
Metamorphic formation via serpentinization of ultramafic rocks (peridotite, dunite) in hydrothermal conditions at low to moderate temperatures
About This Crystal
Carved into a small, stylized alligator or dinosaur shape. The stone exhibits an olive-green to yellowish-green body color with a smooth, polished surface and a waxy to greasy luster. Translucency ranges from opaque to semi-translucent.
Physical Characteristics
Olive-green to yellow-green color, white streak, greasy or waxy luster, perfect cleavage in one direction (though rarely seen in massive carved forms), conchoidal to splintery fracture, specific gravity around 2.5-2.6, soft tenacity.
Optical Properties
Biaxial negative, low birefringence, refractive index typically ranging from 1.56 to 1.57, displays no strong pleochroism in massive forms.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Worldwide, with notable deposits in China, USA (California), Afghanistan, and South Africa
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness of 2.5 to 5.5 depending on the specific mineral species within the serpentine group. Low durability, scratches easily, sensitive to acids and prolonged moisture exposure.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with a soft, damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or water soaking.
Rarity & Value
Common mineral worldwide, highly affordable as a carved decorative object or small figurine.
Special Characteristics
Often features subtle mottled patterns, veining, or inclusions of magnetite and chromite, giving it a jade-like appearance despite being much softer.
Lore & History
Historically used as an amulet for protection against snakebites, poison, and dark magic. In modern crystal healing, it is associated with the heart chakra, emotional clearing, and personal transformation, though these are traditional beliefs rather than scientific claims.
