Jade
Jadeite / Nephrite · Decorative Stone / Semi-Precious Gemstone

Crystal System
Monoclinic; massive, microcrystalline, or granular habit
Mineral Group
Silicates; Inosilicates (Pyroxene group for jadeite, Amphibole group for nephrite)
Chemical Formula
NaAlSi2O6 (Jadeite) or Ca2(Mg,Fe)5Si8O22(OH)2 (Nephrite)
Formation Process
Metamorphic; high-pressure, low-temperature metamorphic environments associated with subduction zones
About This Crystal
Carved into a traditional seated Buddha figurine, this specimen exhibits a pale greenish-white to translucent greyish-green coloration with a characteristic mottled and granular texture. The luster is vitreous to greasy, and the carving is smooth with minor natural inclusions.
Physical Characteristics
Color ranges from white to pale green with dark spots or inclusions. Streak is white. Cleavage is distinct in jadeite, poor in nephrite. Fracture is splintery to uneven. Specific gravity ranges from 2.90 to 3.38 depending on the exact mineral species. Tenacity is exceptionally tough.
Optical Properties
Refractive index ranges from 1.606 to 1.667. Birefringence is weak. It is doubly refractive and typically translucent to opaque with a soft, glowing internal luminescence.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Myanmar (Burma), China, Guatemala, Russia, Canada, United States
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness is 6 to 7 for jadeite and 6 to 6.5 for nephrite. Exceptionally tough due to its interlocking microfibrous or granular structure, making it highly resistant to breakage and ideal for intricate carvings.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners and ultrasonic cleaners. Store away from harder gems to prevent scratching.
Rarity & Value
Common to Rare depending on quality, color intensity, and translucency. Imperial green jade is extremely rare and valuable, while pale, mottled carvings are more common and affordable.
Special Characteristics
Renowned for its unmatched toughness rather than cleavage, interlocking crystal structure provides immense durability, highly prized for fine artistic carvings across Asian cultures.
Lore & History
Deeply revered in Chinese history as the 'Stone of Heaven', symbolizing purity, wisdom, and status. Used for thousands of years in ancient burial suits, ritual objects, and jewelry. Associated with the Heart Chakra in modern metaphysical practices to promote emotional balance and prosperity.
