Lepidolite in matrix
Lepidolite (var. of Polylithionite-Trilithionite series) · Mineral Specimen / Semi-Precious Gemstone

Crystal System
Monoclinic; commonly occurs in massive, scaly, or granular aggregates (micaceous habit)
Mineral Group
Silicates; Phyllosilicate (Mica Group)
Chemical Formula
K(Li,Al)3(Al,Si,Rb)4O10(F,OH)2
Formation Process
Igneous/Magmatic; forms during the late stages of magmatic crystallization in lithium-rich pegmatites under hydrothermal influence.
About This Crystal
The specimen shows small, scaly, lilac to reddish-pink flakes embedded in a dark, earthy matrix. It exhibits a characteristic pearly to vitreous luster on the cleavage faces and is translucent in thin flakes.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Lilac, pink, or purplish-gray; Streak: White; Cleavage: Perfect basal (one direction); Fracture: Uneven; Specific Gravity: 2.8–2.9; Fluorescence: Occasionally creamy white or yellow under UV light.
Optical Properties
Refractive Index: 1.525–1.587; Birefringence: 0.018–0.038; Pleochroism: Weak to moderate in shades of pink/purple; Biaxial (-) optic sign.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Notable sources include Brazil (Minas Gerais), Zimbabwe, Madagascar, and USA (California and Maine); typically found in lithium-bearing granitic pegmatites.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 2.5–3.0; very low durability, easily scratched by a fingernail or copper coin. Brittle and prone to flaking.
Care & Maintenance
Clean only with dry cloth or warm soapy water; avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and harsh chemicals. Store separately from harder minerals to prevent scratching.
Rarity & Value
Relatively common in lithium pegmatites; value is generally low for massive specimens, though highly saturated purple 'mica books' fetch higher prices as collector pieces.
Special Characteristics
Known for high lithium content and characteristic 'micaceous' flash; often associated with pink tourmaline (rubellite), spodumene (kunzite), and quartz.
Lore & History
Historically used as a source of lithium for industrial applications. In metaphysical lore, it is referred to as the 'Stone of Transition' or 'Peace Stone,' believed to assist in stress reduction and emotional balancing.
