About This Crystal

A small, tumbled, heart-shaped or irregularly rounded pocket stone. It exhibits a deep, rich royal blue body color with characteristic golden brassy flecks of pyrite and occasional faint white calcite streaks and mottling. The polish is smooth and glossy with a vitreous to greasy luster, showing opaque to sub-translucent transparency.

Physical Characteristics

Color is deep azure-blue to royal blue, with a light blue streak. It has poor to indistinct cleavage and an uneven to conchoidal fracture. Specific gravity ranges from 2.7 to 2.9. It is brittle in tenacity and generally non-fluorescent, though some calcite components may show a weak orange-pink fluorescence under UV light.

Optical Properties

Isotropic (lazurite is cubic and singly refractive), though aggregate nature can cause complex light scattering. Refractive index is approximately 1.50 to 1.67 depending on the exact mineral constituents. Pleochroism is generally absent or weak due to the aggregate structure.
