Ocean Jasper
Quartz var. Chalcedony (Ocean Jasper) · Decorative Stone and Collector Mineral

Crystal System
Trigonal, microcrystalline habit, typically forms in spherulites (orbicular habit) and massive deposits
Mineral Group
Silicates, specifically Tectosilicates
Chemical Formula
SiO2
Formation Process
Hydrothermal and volcanic processes, forming as silica-rich fluids fill cavities in rhyolitic lava flows and crystallize into spherulitic chalcedony
About This Crystal
Tumbled stone featuring a polished, smooth surface with a vitreous to waxy luster. It exhibits a distinctive multicolored orbicular pattern with tones of pink, peach, white, and a prominent green eye-like formation featuring micro-crystalline quartz drusy pockets.
Physical Characteristics
Color ranges from multicolored pastels (pink, green, white, yellow) with a white streak. It has no true cleavage, exhibits a conchoidal fracture, a specific gravity of around 2.58 to 2.66, and is brittle with generally inert fluorescence under standard UV light.
Optical Properties
Singly or doubly refractive with aggregate birefringence, translucent to opaque transparency, and no significant pleochroism, chatoyancy, or dispersion.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Found exclusively along the coastline of northwestern Madagascar, accessible only at low tide
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7. Good toughness due to microcrystalline interlocking structure, making it highly durable and suitable for everyday jewelry wear.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth, avoid harsh chemical cleaners and prolonged direct sunlight to preserve surface polish.
Rarity & Value
Uncommon to Rare, as the original mining location in Madagascar is largely depleted. Value depends on the vibrancy of colors, clarity of the orbicular patterns, and presence of quartz crystal eyes.
Special Characteristics
Features striking orbicular patterns (bull's-eyes or cellular structures) and central micro-geode cavities containing tiny sparkling quartz crystals.
Lore & History
Discovered relatively recently in the late 20th century, Ocean Jasper is a modern trade name lacking ancient historical lore. In contemporary crystal healing, it is associated with the solar plexus, heart, and throat chakras, and is believed to promote relaxation, optimism, and emotional release.
