Scolecite
Scolecite · Mineral Specimen and Collector Mineral

Crystal System
Monoclinic; typically forms prismatic crystals elongated to needle-like shapes, frequently radiating in fan or spray aggregates.
Mineral Group
Silicates (Subgroup: Tectosilicate, Zeolite group)
Chemical Formula
CaAl2Si3O10·3H2O
Formation Process
Hydrothermal or low-temperature metamorphic formation, typically crystallizing from mineral-rich water solutions filling cavities and vesicles in basaltic lavas.
About This Crystal
The specimen features a classic fan-shaped radiating spray of colorless to white, elongated prismatic crystals with vitreous to silky luster, displaying translucent to transparent properties along individual needle edges.
Physical Characteristics
Color is white to colorless, streak is white, perfect cleavage in two directions forming prismatic fragments, uneven fracture, specific gravity of approximately 2.2-2.4, brittle tenacity.
Optical Properties
Biaxial (-) with refractive indices around nα = 1.512, nβ = 1.519, nγ = 1.520. Displays low birefringence and is doubly refractive.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Notable sources include India (Maharashtra, Pune region), Iceland, USA, and Brazil. Forms in cavities of basaltic volcanic rocks and hydrothermal environments.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness of 5.5, poor toughness due to perfect cleavage, sensitive to sudden temperature changes and acids, not suitable for everyday jewelry wear.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with mild warm soapy water and a soft brush, avoid ultrasonic cleaners, harsh chemicals, and extreme thermal shock. Store separately from harder minerals.
Rarity & Value
Uncommon as large aesthetic mineral specimens, with value determined by the size and perfection of the radiating spray formations; popular among mineral collectors.
Special Characteristics
Famous for its striking acicular radiating spray habit, and like many zeolites, it can lose water when heated.
Lore & History
Often associated in modern crystal healing with inner peace, tranquility, and connection to the third eye chakra, though these remain traditional beliefs rather than scientific properties.
