Peach Moonstone

Feldspar var. Moonstone (Orthoclase/Albite) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Carving

Peach Moonstone

Crystal System

Monoclinic; typically found in massive or pebble forms when carved; can show prismatic habit in raw state.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicates); Feldspar group

Chemical Formula

(K,Na)AlSi3O8 (Potassium Aluminum Silicate)

Formation Process

Igneous: Forms from cooling magma where orthoclase and albite separate into alternating layers (exsolution) during cooling.

About This Crystal

This specimen is a polished carving in a mushroom shape. It displays a creamy white base with swirled peach, tan, and light orange inclusions. It is translucent to opaque with a soft vitreous to pearly luster.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Peach, cream, tan; Streak: White; Cleavage: Perfect in two directions at nearly 90 degrees; Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven; Specific Gravity: 2.56-2.59; Fluorescence: Weak orange or blue under UV.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.518-1.526; Birefringence: 0.005-0.008; Displays adularescence (a billowy white/peach glow) caused by light scattering between feldspar layers.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Primarily India, Madagascar, and Sri Lanka; found in pegmatites and plutonic igneous rocks.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 6.0-6.5; Toughness: Poor due to perfect cleavage; brittle. Requires care as it can chip if dropped.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth; avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Store separately from harder stones like quartz or diamonds to prevent scratching.

Rarity & Value

Common; Peach variety is widely available. Value is determined by the strength of the adularescent 'glow' and the saturation of the peach color. Usually inexpensive in carved forms.

Special Characteristics

Adularescence: The distinctive schiller or glow that moves across the surface as the stone is turned; also contains internal veining of darker peach hues.

Lore & History

Historically associated with lunar energies and the Greek goddess Selene. In modern crystal healing, it is traditionally believed to support emotional balance, feminine energy, and the sacral chakra.
