Physical Characteristics
Color is greyish-white, yellowish, or brown with a characteristic black or dark brown cross. Streak is white. Cleavage is distinct on {110}. Fracture is uneven to subconchoidal. Specific gravity is approximately 3.13 to 3.16. Tenacity is brittle.

Biaxial negative with moderate to high relief. Refractive indices range from 1.629 to 1.643. Exhibits weak to moderate pleochroism in transparent gem varieties, though chiastolite specifically is typically opaque.
