Bloodstone (Heliotrope)

Quartz var. Bloodstone (Chalcedony species) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Bloodstone (Heliotrope)

Crystal System

Trigonal; Microcrystalline (Cryptocrystalline) structure usually found in massive habits

Mineral Group

Silicates; Tectosilicate (Quartz family)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide) with Fe2O3 (Iron Oxide/Hematite) inclusions

Formation Process

Hydrothermal; forms from silica-rich groundwater at relatively low temperatures in cavities and veins of volcanic rocks

About This Crystal

An opaque, dark green variety of chalcedony quartz characterized by red, brownish, or yellow spots of iron oxide inclusions. It features a waxy to vitreous luster and a smooth, dense surface texture in tumbled form.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Deep green with red inclusions; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal; Specific Gravity: 2.58–2.64; Tenacity: Brittle but tough due to interlocking micro-structure; Fluorescence: Usually inert.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.530–1.543; Birefringence: Up to 0.004; Pleochroism: None; Optical Character: Aggregates are typically SR (Singly Refractive) in behavior.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

India (primary source), Brazil, Australia, China, and the United States

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 6.5 to 7; Toughness: Excellent due to cryptocrystalline structure; Stability: High, stable under most conditions.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush; avoid ultrasonic cleaners if there are fractures; store separately to prevent scratching softer stones.

Rarity & Value

Common; Value is determined by the vividness of the green base and the distribution/boldness of the red 'blood' spots; inexpensive for tumbled specimens.

Special Characteristics

Features characteristic red 'blood-like' spots of Jasper or Hematite; some specimens may show mossy or dendritic patterns within the green matrix.

Lore & History

Historically known as Heliotrope, meaning 'Sun Turner.' In ancient times, it was used in Babylonian seals and by Roman gladiators as a protective amulet. In traditional lore, it is associated with the Root Chakra and believed to represent vitality and physical strength.
