Blue Agate Slice

Quartz var. Chalcedony (Agate) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Blue Agate Slice

Crystal System

Trigonal, microcrystalline massive habit forming concentric bands

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate)

Chemical Formula

SiO2

Formation Process

Hydrothermal deposition from silica-rich groundwater filling cavities in volcanic rocks in rhythmic, alternating layers

About This Crystal

A polished transverse slice of an agate nodule featuring vibrant, concentric blue color zoning with bands varying from deep navy to light sky blue, surrounding a central void or vug containing darker dendritic inclusions.

Physical Characteristics

Color is artificially dyed vivid blue with white banding, white streak, no cleavage, conchoidal fracture, specific gravity of 2.60 to 2.65, brittle tenacity, and vitreous to waxy luster

Optical Properties

Refractive index of 1.544 to 1.553, doubly refractive, translucent to opaque, with no significant pleochroism or special optical phenomena

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Brazil, India, Madagascar, and the USA; typically found in volcanic cavities and basaltic vesicles

Hardness & Durability

Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, good toughness due to microcrystalline structure, stable under normal conditions but treated dye may be sensitive to harsh chemicals

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to prevent fading, and keep away from strong acids or harsh commercial cleaners

Rarity & Value

Common, highly accessible, and inexpensive; value depends heavily on size, cut, and the vibrancy of the dye or natural coloring

Special Characteristics

Distinct concentric banding patterns with a central quartz-lined pocket containing dendritic or mineral inclusions; artificially dyed to achieve a striking blue color

Lore & History

Agates have a long history of use as amulets and ornaments dating back to ancient Babylon and Egypt; in modern crystal healing, blue agate is associated with the throat chakra, promoting calmness, communication, and emotional healing, though these are traditional beliefs rather than scientific claims
