Black Tourmalinated Quartz
Quartz var. Tourmalinated Quartz (IMA-approved name: Quartz) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Ornamental Jewelry Stone

Crystal System
Trigonal system, typically forming prismatic crystals that grow within a host quartz crystal matrix.
Mineral Group
Silicates (Subgroup: Tectosilicates for Quartz and Cyclosilicates for Tourmaline)
Chemical Formula
SiO2 with inclusions of Na(Fe3+,Al,Li)3Al6(Si6O18)(BO33)(OH)4 (Schorl)
Formation Process
Hydrothermal and pegmatitic formation where needle-like tourmaline crystals are enveloped and enclosed by growing host quartz crystals.
About This Crystal
The specimen features polished, spherical beads set into a bracelet. The main beads are dark black to smoky quartz containing fine, needle-like black inclusions (schorl tourmaline). Interspersed are lighter, semi-translucent frosted quartz or moonstone-like accent beads, styled with intricate silver-toned metal spacers and charms.
Physical Characteristics
Color includes clear, smoky gray, and opaque black inclusions. Streak is white. Conchoidal fracture. Specific gravity is approximately 2.65 for quartz. Brittle tenacity with no notable cleavage.
Optical Properties
Singly refractive for isotropic properties in the inclusions, but quartz is optically uniaxial positive with a refractive index of 1.544 to 1.553 and low birefringence.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Brazil, Madagascar, USA, and Pakistan, commonly found in pegmatite environments and hydrothermal veins.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness of 7 for the host quartz, making it durable for daily jewelry wear, though care should be taken to avoid scratching softer materials or being scratched by corundum or diamond.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, ultrasonic cleaners if inclusions create fractures, and prolonged direct sunlight to prevent fading of treated components.
Rarity & Value
Common to uncommon. Value depends on the density, contrast, and aesthetic arrangement of the tourmaline needles within the clear quartz matrix. Typically affordable for bead bracelets.
Special Characteristics
Features distinct needle-like black schorl inclusions trapped inside transparent to translucent quartz crystals, creating a striking visual contrast.
Lore & History
Often regarded in modern metaphysical practices as a stone of balancing energies, grounding, and psychic protection, combining the amplifying qualities of quartz with the protective shielding of black tourmaline.
