Rose Quartz

Quartz var. Rose Quartz · Semi-Precious Gemstone and Decorative Stone

Rose Quartz

Crystal System

Trigonal, massive or microcrystalline habit, frequently occurs as large masses without well-formed external crystal faces.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate subgroup)

Chemical Formula

SiO2

Formation Process

Forms predominantly in pegmatites through magmatic crystallization and in hydrothermal veins at moderate temperatures and pressures.

About This Crystal

Small tumbled and drilled beads with a pale pink to soft rose color, translucent to semi-translucent transparency, and a vitreous to waxy luster. The surface is smooth and polished with minor internal cloudiness typical of massive quartz.

Physical Characteristics

Pale pink body color, white streak, no cleavage, conchoidal fracture, specific gravity around 2.65, brittle tenacity, and typically inert under UV light.

Optical Properties

Singly or doubly refractive with a refractive index of 1.544 to 1.553, birefringence of 0.009, and weak or absent pleochroism.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Madagascar, Brazil, United States, South Africa, and India. Forms primarily in pegmatites and hydrothermal veins.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs hardness of 7, good durability with no cleavage, making it suitable for general jewelry use including beaded items.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and prolonged direct sunlight to prevent color fading.

Rarity & Value

Common and widely available, with value determined by color saturation and clarity; generally affordable and rarely subjected to artificial treatments beyond cutting and polishing.

Special Characteristics

May exhibit faint asterism or chatoyancy when cut en cabochon due to microscopic fibrous inclusions, though these tumbled beads display standard translucency.

Lore & History

Historically used as a talisman of love and healing by ancient civilizations. In modern metaphysical practices, it is associated with the Heart Chakra and is believed to promote unconditional love, emotional healing, and peace (traditional beliefs, not scientific claims).
