Green Aventurine

Quartzite var. Green Aventurine · Semi-Precious Gemstone; Decorative Stone

Green Aventurine

Crystal System

Trigonal; typically occurs in massive or granular form rather than distinct crystals.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate group saturated with Cr-Muscovite)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 + K(Al,Cr)2AlSi3O10(OH)2

Formation Process

Metamorphic; forms through the regional metamorphism of quartz-rich sediments where chromium-rich Fuchsite mica is included as an impurity.

About This Crystal

An opaque to translucent green variety of quartzite characterized by 'aventurescence'—a shimmering effect caused by platy mineral inclusions. The specimen is carved into a polished pyramid with a waxy to vitreous luster and a muted forest-green hue.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Pale to deep green; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven; Specific Gravity: 2.64–2.69; Fluorescence: Generally inert but may show weak reddish-brown under LWUV.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.544–1.553; Birefringence: 0.009; Optical Phenomenon: Aventurescence (metallic glitters caused by Fuchsite mica scales).

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

India (major source), Brazil, Russia, and Tanzania.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 6.5–7; Toughness: Very good due to its interlocking granular structure; highly durable for jewelry and carvings.

Care & Maintenance

Wash with warm soapy water; safe for ultrasonic cleaners in most cases. Store away from harder stones like Topaz or Diamonds to prevent scratching.

Rarity & Value

Common; Value is determined by the intensity of green and the quality ofaventurescence. Generally affordable ($5-$30 for decorative carvings).

Special Characteristics

Aventurescence - the spangled, shimmering visual effect caused by the reflection of light from tiny inclusions of chrome-mica (Fuchsite).

Lore & History

Historically used as a 'Stone of Opportunity' or luck. In ancient Ethiopia, it was used to create tools. In modern crystal healing, it is associated with the Heart Chakra and believed to promote prosperity and emotional calm.
