Red Jasper
Quartz var. Jasper (Red) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Crystal System
Trigonal (microcrystalline); typically occurs in massive habits without visible crystal faces.
Mineral Group
Silicates (Tectosilicate)
Chemical Formula
SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide) with Fe2O3 (Hematite) inclusions
Formation Process
Primarily sedimentary or hydrothermal precipitation; forms when silica-rich fluids permeate porous rocks or settle in volcanic cavities at low to moderate temperatures.
About This Crystal
An opaque, microcrystalline variety of quartz colored deep brick-red to brownish-red. This specimen shows a tumbled, triangular shape with a vitreous to earthy luster and mottled lighter inclusions creating a 'speckled' or 'brecciated' appearance.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Brick red; Streak: White to pale red; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal to splintery; Specific Gravity: 2.58–2.91; Fluorescence: Typically none.
Optical Properties
Refractive Index: 1.544–1.553; Birefringence: usually non-measurable due to opacity; Optically Uniaxial (+); Non-pleochroic.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Brazil, South Africa, India, USA (Oregon), and Australia. Found globally in sedimentary and metamorphic environments.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 6.5–7; Toughness: Excellent (very durable); highly stable for everyday jewelry wear and resistant to most household chemicals.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid harsh mechanical cleaners like steam cleaners if there are fractures. Generally resistant to sunlight fading.
Rarity & Value
Very Common; value is determined by pattern aesthetics and size. Usually inexpensive, ranging from $1 to $20 for typical tumbled stones and cabochons.
Special Characteristics
High iron oxide content (Hematite) creates the opacity and red hue; often features orbicular or 'brecciated' patterns where the stone has broken and re-healed with quartz or chalcedony.
Lore & History
Historically known as the 'Stone of Endurance' and used by ancient Egyptians in amulets and by Native Americans as a protection stone. In metaphysical traditions, it is associated with the Root Chakra and believed to provide grounding, stamina, and emotional stability.
