Pink Calcite

Calcite var. Manganoan Calcite · Mineral Specimen and Decorative Stone

Pink Calcite

Crystal System

Trigonal, shaped into a polished, faceted tower or obelisk habit

Mineral Group

Carbonates

Chemical Formula

CaCO3 (with manganese substitutions)

Formation Process

Hydrothermal and sedimentary precipitation, often forming in veins or cavity fillings at low to moderate temperatures and pressures

About This Crystal

This is a polished stone tower with a pyramidal apex, displaying distinct color zoning from pale whitish-pink at the base to a deeper, rich rosy-pink at the top. The specimen is translucent to semi-opaque with a vitreous to waxy luster, showing visible internal fractures, cleavage planes, and growth banding characteristic of massive or coarsely crystalline calcite.

Physical Characteristics

Color ranges from soft pink to deep rose-pink with white banding; streak is white; exhibits perfect rhombohedral cleavage in three directions at roughly 75-degree angles; fracture is conchoidal to uneven; specific gravity is approximately 2.71; brittle tenacity; may show bright pinkish-red fluorescence under ultraviolet light due to manganese content.

Optical Properties

Uniaxial negative with strong birefringence, resulting in double refraction; refractive index is approximately 1.486 to 1.658; usually non-pleochroic in these light pink tones.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Madagascar, Mexico, and Peru in hydrothermal veins and sedimentary limestone environments

Hardness & Durability

Mohs hardness of 3, making it very soft and easily scratched by a copper penny or steel knife. It has poor toughness due to perfect cleavage and is sensitive to acids (fizzing in dilute hydrochloric acid). Not recommended for daily-wear rings.

Care & Maintenance

Clean gently with a soft, damp cloth and mild soap; avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and acidic household cleaners. Store separately from harder stones to prevent scratching, and keep away from prolonged direct sunlight to prevent potential color fading.

Rarity & Value

Common to uncommon depending on the intensity of the pink color and the size of the specimen. Value is generally affordable, driven by size, color saturation, and the quality of the polish. Treatments are rare for this material.

Special Characteristics

Distinct horizontal color zoning, visible internal rhombohedral cleavage planes, and potential strong pink fluorescence under UV light due to manganese impurities.

Lore & History

Historically used as a decorative stone and carving material. In modern metaphysical practices, pink calcite is traditionally associated with the Heart Chakra, symbolizing emotional healing, self-love, and compassion. Note that these are traditional cultural beliefs and not scientifically validated properties.
