Color is colorless or white with a white streak. It exhibits perfect cubic cleavage in three directions intersecting at 90 degrees. Fracture is conchoidal. Specific gravity is approximately 2.16. It is completely water-soluble and has a distinct salty taste.

Singly refractive (isotropic) with a refractive index of approximately 1.544. No pleochroism.
