Shungite
Shungite (Non-crystalline carbon polymorph) · Collector Mineral / Decorative Stone / Industrial Mineral

Crystal System
Amorphous (Non-crystalline); lacks a systematic internal atomic structure. Occurs in massive or stony habits.
Mineral Group
Mineraloid (Native Element group equivalent); carbon-rich organic rock.
Chemical Formula
C (mostly Carbon, $>98\%$ in Elite Shungite) with trace Fullerenes ($C_{60}, C_{70}$)
Formation Process
Metamorphic/Sedimentary; formed from the coalification of ancient Precambrian organic remains (algae) over 2 billion years ago, likely influenced by hydrothermal activity.
About This Crystal
An opaque, black, coal-like mineral with a sub-metallic to vitreous luster. High-grade 'Elite' or 'Noble' shungite (seen here) has a silvery-black mirror-like surface and conchoidal fracture.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Black to silvery-grey; Streak: Black; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal (shell-like); Specific Gravity: 1.8 - 2.0; Conductive to electricity; Non-fluorescent.
Optical Properties
Opaque; Sub-metallic to vitreous luster; no birefringence or refractive index due to amorphous and opaque nature.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Shunga village, Karelia, Russia (Primary source); also reported in central Africa and Kazakhstan.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 3.5 - 4.0. Relatively brittle and soft; prone to scratching and shattering if dropped. Not recommended for high-wear jewelry.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth; avoid ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals. Store separately to prevent scratches from harder stones.
Rarity & Value
Common (Regular shungite) to Rare (Elite shungite). Value is determined by carbon content; 'Elite' grade commands the highest price due to its high carbon purity and vitreous appearance.
Special Characteristics
Highly electrically conductive; contains trace amounts of natural fullerenes (spherical carbon molecules), which are extremely rare in nature.
Lore & History
Historically used as a water purifier by Peter the Great in the 18th century. Metaphysically associated with the Root Chakra and believed to offer electromagnetic frequency (EMF) protection.
