Formation Process

Igneous process where silicic lava cools rapidly without sufficient time for crystal growth, followed by partial devitrification over time which forms radial clusters of cristobalite known as snowflakes.

About This Crystal

A polished, tumbled cabochon of deep black volcanic glass featuring distinct, contrasting white to greyish-white star-like or snowflake-shaped inclusions (cristobalite). It has a smooth, polished surface with a high vitreous to glossy luster and is completely opaque.

Physical Characteristics

Color is jet black with stark white snowflake patches; streak is white; no cleavage; fracture is distinctly conchoidal, yielding very sharp edges; specific gravity is approximately 2.35 to 2.45; tenacity is brittle.

Optical Properties

Isotropic (singly refractive) due to its amorphous structure; opaque with no pleochroism or birefringence.
