About This Crystal
The specimen exhibits a deep pinkish-red to brownish-red coloration with a waxy to vitreous luster. It has a compact, massive habit with uneven, irregular surfaces showing typical conchoidal to uneven fracture textures.
Physical Characteristics
Color ranges from rose-pink to deep red, often with black veins of manganese oxide. Streak is white. Cleavage is good in two directions intersecting at roughly 87 and 93 degrees. Specific gravity is approximately 3.4 to 3.7. Tenacity is brittle.
Optical Properties
Biaxial, positively or negatively refractive with a refractive index between 1.733 and 1.744. Exhibits slight pleochroism in shades of pink and red.
