Tiger's Eye

Quartz var. Tiger's Eye (Pseudomorph of Quartz after Crocidolite) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Metamorphic Rock-constituent

Tiger's Eye

Crystal System

Trigonal/Hexagonal system (Quartz structure); usually found in massive habit with a fibrous texture inherited from crocidolite.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate group)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide) with inclusions of altered iron oxide (primarily Limonite/Goethite)

Formation Process

Pseudomorphic formation where silica replaces fibers of crocidolite asbestos, while iron staining creates the golden-brown hues.

About This Crystal

A chatoyant gemstone with a silky luster. It displays alternating bands of golden-yellow, bronze, and deep brown. The specimen shown is a polished double-terminated point (wand) exhibiting typical parallel fibrous structuring.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Golden yellow to deep brown; Streak: Yellow-brown; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal to splintery (due to fibers); Density: 2.64-2.71; Fluorescence: Usually inert.

Optical Properties

Displays distinct chatoyancy (cat's eye effect) due to the reflection of light off the parallel fibrous inclusions. Refractive Index: 1.544-1.553; Uniaxial (+).

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Primary source is South Africa (Northern Cape); also found in Western Australia, India, Burma, and Namibia.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 6.5–7; Toughness: Good (fibrous structure lends strength); Stable and suitable for daily wear jewelry.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. While durable, it should be protected from hydrofluoric acid and extreme heat which can alter the iron oxidation state.

Rarity & Value

Common; Value is determined by the crispness of the chatoyant 'eye,' color saturation, and quality of polish. Often heat-treated to create 'Red Tiger's Eye.'

Special Characteristics

Chatoyancy is the defining feature, created by the silky, parallel growth of oxidized amphibole fibers within the quartz matrix.

Lore & History

Historically worn by Roman soldiers for protection and courage; traditionally associated with the solar plexus chakra and believed to promote mental clarity and grounding.
