Formation Process
Hydrothermal; formed when mineral-rich fluids filled cavities (vugs) within basaltic lavas. The blue color is due to the substitution of copper for calcium.
About This Crystal
An opaque to translucent sky-blue stone characterized by white 'spider-web' patterns and marbling. It has a vitreous to silky luster and often contains reddish-brown inclusions of hematite or dark dendrites of manganese.

Biaxial positive; Refractive Index: 1.59 to 1.63; Birefringence: 0.038; Luster is typically silky due to the fibrous structure of the pectolite.

Mohs Hardness: 4.5 to 5.0. It is relatively soft and brittle with fair toughness; it can be scratched by quartz or steel and is prone to chipping.
Care & Maintenance
Highly sensitive to heat and chemicals; clean only with warm, soapy water. Should be stored away from harder gemstones to prevent scratching and kept out of direct sunlight as the blue color can fade over time.
Rarity & Value
Very Rare (Single-source mineral); value is driven by the intensity of the blue color and the contrast of the white patterns. Deep blue specimens with no brown patches command the highest price.

Lore & History
First discovered in 1916 but 'rediscovered' in 1974 by Miguel Méndez, who named it 'Larimar' (his daughter Larissa and 'Mar,' the Spanish word for sea). Traditionally associated with the Throat Chakra, it is believed by some to facilitate clear communication and inner peace.
