Amazonite

Microcline var. Amazonite · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Amazonite

Crystal System

Triclinic, typically forms in prismatic or tabular crystals, but commonly occurs as massive or tumbled aggregates.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate)

Chemical Formula

KAlSi3O8

Formation Process

Igneous and pegmatitic formation, crystallizing slowly from cooling magma rich in volatiles at high temperatures, with coloration often enhanced by irradiation and trace lead.

About This Crystal

A tumbled, smooth cabochon-style specimen displaying a distinct blue-green to turquoise-green coloration. It has a vitreous to slightly waxy luster when polished, opaque to translucent transparency, and shows subtle mottled white grid-like streaks (perthitic intergrowths).

Physical Characteristics

Color ranges from bright turquoise-green to bluish-green with white streaks. Streak is white. Cleavage is perfect in two directions at nearly right angles. Fracture is uneven to conchoidal. Specific gravity is approximately 2.56 to 2.58. Tenacity is brittle.

Optical Properties

Biaxial negative with a refractive index ranging between 1.514 and 1.530. Birefringence is weak (around 0.008). Pleochroism is weak. It does not display strong chatoyancy or asterism, but polished pieces may show a soft sheen due to perthite lamellae.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Notable sources include Russia (Ilmen Mountains), the United States (Colorado), Madagascar, Brazil, and Austria. Typically found in granitic pegmatites.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs hardness is 6 to 6.5, making it moderately durable. However, it has good to perfect cleavage which makes it susceptible to chipping if struck sharply. Wearability for rings requires protective settings.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, ultrasonic cleaners, and steam cleaning. Store separately from harder gemstones to prevent scratching, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct, intense sunlight.

Rarity & Value

Common to uncommon. Value is determined by intense, even green-blue saturation with minimal white inclusions. Typically affordable as tumbled stones or carvings, though top-grade gem material commands higher prices. Treatments are rare as natural color is usually vibrant enough.

Special Characteristics

Often exhibits characteristic white perthitic streaks or grid-like patterns (albite twinning) across the surface, which is a hallmark visual feature of microcline feldspar.

Lore & History

Historically associated with ancient Mesopotamian cultures and legendary Amazon warrior women, though direct archaeological links are debated. In modern crystal healing, amazonite is known as the 'stone of courage and truth,' traditionally associated with the Heart and Throat chakras to soothe emotional trauma and encourage clear communication. (Note: These are traditional beliefs, not scientific claims.)
