Moldavite

Tektite var. Moldavite · Collector Mineral / Semi-Precious Gemstone (Meteoritic Material)

Moldavite

Crystal System

Amorphous (Non-crystalline) glass with a splash, aerodynamic, or drop-like habit

Mineral Group

Tektite (Natural Glass)

Chemical Formula

SiO2(+Al2O3), rich in potassium and calcium, typically 75-80% silica

Formation Process

Meteoritic Impact; formed ~14.7 million years ago by the terrestrial silica-rich rock melting and being ejected after a meteorite impact

About This Crystal

A translucent to transparent natural glass exhibiting a forest green to olive green hue. It is characterized by a deeply sculpted, pitted, or wrinkled surface texture caused by chemical erosion over millions of years.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Forest green; Streak: White/None; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal; Specific Gravity: 2.27–2.40; Luster: Vitreous; No fluorescence under UV light.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.48–1.54; Isotropic (Single Refraction); No pleochroism; internal features often include bubbles and Lechatelierite (wires of high-temp silica).

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Bohemian plateau of the Czech Republic (Moldau River basin); associated with the Ries Impact Crater

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 5.5–7.0; Brittle toughness; sensitive to sudden temperature changes and physical impact.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and harsh chemicals. Store separately from harder gemstones to prevent scratching.

Rarity & Value

Very Rare; limited geographical supply that is being depleted. Value is determined by size, color, and complexity of the surface texture ('sculpting'). Often imitated by green glass.

Special Characteristics

Unique aerodynamic shapes, internal 'Lechatelierite' inclusions which help distinguish it from synthetic glass imitations, and distinctive 'ferny' or 'sculpted' surface topography.

Lore & History

Historically used as a talisman for good fortune and fertility. In modern metaphysical circles, it is considered a high-frequency stone of transformation and awakening associated with the heart chakra.
