Tiger's Eye (Matrix)
Quartz var. Tiger's Eye with Hematite and Limonite · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Mineral Specimen

Crystal System
Trigonal crystal system; fiber-like or pseudomorphous habit after riebeckite (crocidolite)
Mineral Group
Silicates (Tectosilicate)
Chemical Formula
SiO2 with inclusions of FeO(OH) (Limonite) and Fe2O3 (Hematite)
Formation Process
Metamorphic/Hydrothermal replacement: Formed when quartz replaces the fibrous mineral crocidolite (asbestos) while maintaining the fibrous structure through pseudomorphism.
About This Crystal
An opaque specimen showing chatoyant bands of golden-yellow and brown quartz mixed with dark, metallic layers of iron oxides. Typically exhibits a silky to vitreous luster and a layered, fibrous texture.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Gold, brown, black, and rust red. Streak: Yellow-brown. Cleavage: None. Fracture: Splintery or fibrous. Specific Gravity: 2.64–2.71. Fluorescence: Generally inert.
Optical Properties
Exhibits chatoyancy (cat's eye effect) due to the parallel orientation of silicate fibers. Refractive Index: 1.544–1.553. Birefringence: 0.009.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
South Africa (Griequaland West), Western Australia, Namibia, and Brazil; typically found in iron-rich sedimentary formations.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 6.5–7. Toughness: Good to excellent due to the fibrous structure. Highly wearable for jewelry.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners if the specimen has heavy iron inclusions or fractures.
Rarity & Value
Common rarity. Value is determined by the strength of the chatoyancy, the distinctness of color bands, and the size of the specimen.
Special Characteristics
Chatoyancy is the primary feature; some specimens may show 'honey' or 'silk' textures. When including metallic hematite, it may be referred to as 'Tiger Iron'.
Lore & History
Historically used in Roman talismans for protection in battle. In modern lore, it is believed to promote courage, mental clarity, and grounding, often associated with the Solar Plexus chakra.
