Caribbean Calcite

Calcite with Aragonite and Celestite · Decorative Stone / Semi-Precious Gemstone

Caribbean Calcite

Crystal System

Trigonal (Calcite) and Orthorhombic (Aragonite/Celestite), typically found in massive, microcrystalline, or banded habits.

Mineral Group

Carbonates (Calcite/Aragonite) and Sulfates (Celestite)

Chemical Formula

CaCO3 (Calcite/Aragonite) + SrSO4 (Celestite)

Formation Process

Sedimentary/Hydrothermal; formed through the precipitation of calcium carbonate in marine or groundwater environments, often involving the presence of strontium creating the blue highlights.

About This Crystal

The specimen is a carved crescent moon displaying a sea-foam to pale blue base with white, cream, and sandy-beige banding. It features a waxy to vitreous luster, translucent to opaque sections, and small pockets or 'druzy' vugs with teal-blue inclusions likely consisting of celestite.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Pale blue/mint green, white, tan; Streak: White; Cleavage: Perfect rhombohedral (in calcite components); Fracture: Uneven to subconchoidal; Specific Gravity: 2.7 to 2.9; Tenacity: Brittle; Fluorescence: May show weak pink or white under UV.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.486 - 1.658 (Birefringent); Opacity: Translucent to Opaque; Optical Phenomena: Banding and occasional druzy shimmer in vugs.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Pakistan (exclusively found in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, specifically the Karak district).

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 3 (soft); Toughness: Low/Fragile; Stability: Sensitive to acids, heat, and sharp impacts. Not recommended for high-wear jewelry.

Care & Maintenance

Avoid acidic cleaners (vinegar, lemon), ultrasonic cleaners, and steam. Clean only with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Store separately to avoid scratching by harder minerals like quartz.

Rarity & Value

Relatively new find (discovered circa 2019); uncommon due to limited geographic source. Value is determined by color intensity, the presence of druzy pockets, and carving craftsmanship.

Special Characteristics

Distinctive 'beach-like' appearance with color-zoning; contains natural vugs and tiny crystal-lined cavities; teal celestite inclusions provide a unique color contrast.

Lore & History

Historically a modern discovery with no ancient lore. In metaphysical circles, it is associated with the Crown and Third Eye chakras, believed to promote spiritual awakening, calm, and lucid dreaming. It is often called a 'stone of emotional transition'.
