About This Crystal

The specimen features a rich, deep purple to magenta body color with a dull to sub-vitreous luster and opaque transparency. It exhibits a somewhat irregular, massive habit with contrasting whitish-grey matrix inclusions (likely quartz or feldspar) and minor iron-oxide staining on the surface.

Physical Characteristics

Color ranges from deep purple, reddish-purple to dark brown-black. Streak is light purple to pinkish. Cleavage is perfect in two directions. Fracture is uneven to conchoidal. Specific gravity is approximately 3.4 to 3.7. Tenacity is brittle.

Biaxial (-) with refractive indices around 1.700 to 1.840. Exhibits distinct pleochroism in shades of purple and red-brown. Doubly refractive.
