Green Aventurine

Quartz var. Green Aventurine · Semi-Precious Gemstone

Green Aventurine

Crystal System

Trigonal, massive or microcrystalline quartz aggregate (quartzite) habit

Mineral Group

Silicates

Chemical Formula

SiO2 with fuchsite inclusions

Formation Process

Metamorphic formation, originating from quartz-rich sandstones subjected to heat and pressure, with concurrent growth of platy chromium-rich muscovite (fuchsite) flakes.

About This Crystal

A polished, tumbled smooth, rounded triangular-shaped specimen of pale to medium mint green color. It exhibits a translucent to sub-translucent appearance with a characteristic subtle glittering sheen (aventurescence) caused by tiny reflective mineral inclusions.

Physical Characteristics

Color is pale mint green; streak is white; cleavage is none; fracture is conchoidal to uneven; specific gravity is approximately 2.65; tenacity is brittle; non-magnetic; exhibits no prominent fluorescence.

Optical Properties

Refractive index is 1.544-1.553; doubly refractive (uniaxial positive); exhibits weak birefringence; aventurescence (a glistening effect caused by light reflecting off small, uniformly oriented mineral flakes inside the stone).

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

India, Brazil, Russia, Austria, and Tanzania; found in metamorphic quartzites

Hardness & Durability

Mohs hardness of 7; good toughness due to microcrystalline interlocking structure; stable to light and normal household chemicals; suitable for daily jewelry wear.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush; avoid harsh acids or prolonged extreme heat; store separately from softer gemstones to prevent scratching, though it is durable enough to withstand most standard storage.

Rarity & Value

Common; very affordable and widely available on the market; value is determined primarily by color saturation, uniformity, and the density of the reflective fuchsite flakes.

Special Characteristics

Aventurescence, which is a metallic or glittering reflection caused by light hitting included mica or fuchsite platelets aligned within the quartz matrix.

Lore & History

Often referred to as the stone of opportunity and luck in modern metaphysical practices. Associated with the Heart Chakra, traditionally believed to promote emotional calm, optimism, and well-being. Historically, the name aventurine derives from the Italian 'a ventura' meaning 'by chance', originally describing the accidental discovery of goldstone glass.
