Dalmatian Jasper (left) and Smoky Quartz (right)
Quartz var. Smoky Quartz and Microcrystalline Quartz var. Jasper · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Ornamental Stone

Crystal System
Trigonal
Mineral Group
Silicates (Tectosilicates)
Chemical Formula
SiO2 (both minerals, with dark spots in Dalmatian stone composed of arfvedsonite or tourmaline)
Formation Process
Dalmatian stone is an igneous intrusive rock (microgranite/pegmatite rich in quartz and feldspar with dark amphibole inclusions); Smoky Quartz forms primarily in pegmatites and hydrothermal veins through natural irradiation
About This Crystal
Two beaded bracelets worn on the wrist. The left bracelet consists of opaque, cream-to-beige beads with distinctive black or dark brown spots characteristic of Dalmatian Jasper. The right bracelet features translucent to transparent, dark brown to greyish-black polished spherical beads of Smoky Quartz with a vitreous luster.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Cream/beige with black spots (Dalmatian), translucent brownish-grey to dark brown (Smoky Quartz). Streak: White. Luster: Vitreous to waxy. Fracture: Conchoidal. Specific Gravity: Approx. 2.65.
Optical Properties
Dalmatian Jasper is opaque with no special optical phenomena. Smoky Quartz is transparent to translucent, singly or doubly refractive with a weak to moderate dichroism in shades of brown.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Dalmatian Jasper is primarily sourced from Mexico (Chihuahua); Smoky Quartz is found worldwide with notable deposits in Brazil, Madagascar, and the Swiss Alps
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness of 7 for both minerals. Good durability and toughness suitable for everyday jewelry wear, though care should be taken against hard impacts.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemicals, prolonged exposure to extreme heat, and direct sunlight for extended periods to prevent fading of smoky quartz color.
Rarity & Value
Both are common minerals globally. In polished bead bracelet form, they are affordable and widely accessible, typically ranging from low to moderate cost.
Special Characteristics
Smoky quartz derives its color from natural gamma irradiation acting on trace aluminum impurities within the silicon dioxide lattice.
Lore & History
Dalmatian Jasper is traditionally associated with grounding, playfulness, and bringing joy. Smoky Quartz is widely used in crystal healing for stress relief, emotional grounding, and root chakra balancing. These are traditional belief systems and cultural associations rather than scientifically proven claims.
