Rhodochrosite (Banded)
Rhodochrosite (Manganese Carbonate) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Mineral Specimen

Crystal System
Trigonal; typically occurs in massive, stalactitic, or botryoidal forms; rarely as rhombohedral crystals.
Mineral Group
Carbonates; Calcite group
Chemical Formula
MnCO3 (with possible Ca, Mg, Fe substitutions)
Formation Process
Hydrothermal; forms in low to medium temperature hydrothermal veins and as a secondary mineral in manganese-rich sedimentary or metamorphic deposits.
About This Crystal
This specimen is a heart-shaped cabochon displaying characteristic 'bacon-strip' banding. Features creamy-white to light-pink base colors with sharp, undulating reddish-pink veins. It is opaque with a vitreous to pearly luster.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Pink to deep red with white banding; Streak: White; Cleavage: Perfect rhombohedral (though not visible in this polished form); Fracture: Uneven to conchoidal; Specific Gravity: 3.5–3.7; Fluorescence: Often none, but may show weak red under longwave UV.
Optical Properties
Refractive Index: 1.597–1.816; Birefringence: 0.219 (Very high); Uniaxial negative; No pleochroism in massive forms.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Argentina (Sierras de Córdoba), Peru, South Africa, and USA (Colorado); Capillitas mine in Argentina is famous for banded varieties.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 3.5–4.0; Poor toughness due to perfect cleavage; brittle; highly sensitive to acids and heat.
Care & Maintenance
Clean only with warm soapy water and a soft cloth; avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Store separately from harder stones like quartz to prevent scratching. Keep away from household acids (like vinegar).
Rarity & Value
Relatively common in massive form but high-quality banded material from Argentina is increasingly sought after. Value is driven by color intensity and the contrast/pattern of the bands.
Special Characteristics
Distinctive concentric or parallel banding often referred to as 'Inca Rose' or 'bacon-strip' pattern; reacts with effervescence to warm dilute hydrochloric acid.
Lore & History
Historically known as the 'Inca Rose' as the Incas believed it was the solidified blood of their ancestral rulers. In modern crystal practices, it is associated with the heart chakra, self-love, and emotional healing.
