Ocean Jasper

Quartz var. Chalcedony (Orbicular Jasper) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Collector Mineral

Ocean Jasper

Crystal System

Trigonal (Microcrystalline) and Monoclinic (Moganite); habit is massive, orbicular, and spherulitic.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicates); Quartz group

Chemical Formula

SiO2 with impurities of Fe, Al, Mg, and Ca

Formation Process

Hydrothermal; silica-rich fluids precipitated in cavities of volcanic rock (rhyolite), forming spherulites or 'orbs' through radial growth around a nucleus.

About This Crystal

An opaque, microcrystalline variety of quartz featuring distinct orb-like patterns. Colors include brick red, cream, tan, and grey. It displays a waxy to vitreous luster upon polishing with a smooth, dense surface.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Red, white, tan; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven; Specific Gravity: 2.6 – 2.7; Fluorescence: Generally inert but can show patchy green or yellow under SW UV.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.544 – 1.553; Birefringence: Weak (0.009); Pleochroism: None; Optical character: Aggregate; Phenomena: Orbicular patterning (circular eyes).

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Madagascar (specifically the Marovato and Kabamby regions along the northwestern coast); found in silicified rhyolite flows.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 6.5 – 7; Toughness: Excellent; Stability: Very stable; suitable for daily jewelry wear and cabochons.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners if the stone has natural pits or druzy vugs. Generally resistant to fading in sunlight.

Rarity & Value

Uncommon; true Ocean Jasper is found only in Madagascar. Value is determined by 'eye' definition, color variety, and polish quality; prices range from $5 to $100+ for premium specimens.

Special Characteristics

Orbicular growth (spherulites) creates 'flowers' or 'eyes'; occasionally contains tiny quartz-lined vugs (druzy) or translucent chalcedony bands.

Lore & History

Discovered in the 1920s but lost until 1999; named for its coastal mining locations accessible only at low tide. Traditionally associated with the Solar Plexus chakra and believed to promote emotional detoxification and joy.
