Aventurine

Quartzite var. Aventurine (Quartz with Fuchsite inclusions) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Aventurine

Crystal System

Trigonal; typically occurs in massive or granular form rather than distinct large crystals.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 + K(Al,Cr)2(AlSi3O10)(OH)2 (Quartz plus Chrome-Mica)

Formation Process

Metamorphic; it is a quartzite that has undergone recrystallization. The aventurescence is caused by platy inclusions of Fuchsite mica that align during formation.

About This Crystal

A light to medium green, translucent to opaque stone with a grainy texture. It exhibits a dull to waxy luster on rough surfaces and a vitreous luster when polished. Small, sparkling metallic glitters (aventurescence) are visible under direct light.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Pale green; Streak: White; Cleavage: None (partitions poorly); Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven; Specific Gravity: 2.64–2.69; Fluorescence: Generally inert.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.544–1.553; Birefringence: 0.009; Optical Phenomenon: Aventurescence caused by light reflecting off internal mica flakes.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Notably sourced from India, Brazil, and Russia. Forms primarily in metamorphic environments.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 6.5–7; Toughness: Good (due to interlocking granular structure); Stability: Very stable under normal conditions.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners if there are heavy internal fractures. Store separately from harder stones like Topaz or Sapphire to avoid scratches.

Rarity & Value

Common; Value is determined by the intensity of green color and the density of sparkles. Usually inexpensive and widely available.

Special Characteristics

Aventurescence: The 'glitter' effect caused by Fuchsite inclusions. Occasionally contains Hematite or Goethite which can create reddish-brown spots.

Lore & History

Historically used for talismans and decorative carvings. In traditional crystal lore, it is known as the 'Stone of Opportunity' and is associated with the Heart Chakra, wealth, and luck.
