About This Crystal
The specimen is a carved whale-shaped pendant made of opaque pink rhodonite with characteristic dark blackish-brown dendritic veins and patches of manganese oxide. The surface is polished to a smooth, vitreous to greasy luster, displaying a mottled pink and dark matrix typical of gem-grade material.
Physical Characteristics
Color ranges from rose pink to deep red with black manganese oxide veins. Streak is white. Cleavage is perfect in two directions intersecting at roughly 92 and 88 degrees. Fracture is uneven to conchoidal. Specific gravity is approximately 3.4 to 3.7. Tenacity is brittle.
Optical Properties
Biaxial (+) with refractive indices ranging from 1.711 to 1.744. Birefringence is 0.014 to 0.027. Pleochroism is distinct in shades of pink, yellowish-red, and deep red. Doubly refractive.
