Lapis Lazuli

Lazurite aggregate (Rock composed mainly of Lazurite, Calcite, and Pyrite) · Decorative Stone and Semi-Precious Gemstone

Lapis Lazuli

Crystal System

Cubic (Isometric) for individual mineral components; massive or tumbled habit for this specimen

Mineral Group

Silicate, specifically Tectosilicate (Feldspathoid group)

Chemical Formula

(Na,Ca)8(AlSiO4)6(SO4,S,Cl)2 (Lazurite component)

Formation Process

Metamorphic formation resulting from contact metamorphism of limestone into skarn

About This Crystal

A polished, tumbled stone displaying a deep royal blue color with distinct white patches of calcite and metallic brass-yellow flecks of pyrite inclusions

Physical Characteristics

Rich royal blue body color with white and golden patches; light blue streak; cleavage is poor; fracture is uneven to conchoidal; specific gravity is around 2.7 to 2.9; opaque with a vitreous to greasy luster

Optical Properties

Isotropic (singly refractive) lazurite, though as an aggregate it shows complex optical properties; refractive index is approximately 1.50 to 1.67

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Badakhshan province in Afghanistan, with other sources in Chile, Russia, and the USA

Hardness & Durability

Mohs hardness of 5 to 5.5; fair to moderate durability; sensitive to scratching, acids, and thermal shock; care is required in jewelry

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth; avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or extreme heat

Rarity & Value

Common to Uncommon depending on grade; high-grade Persian quality is rare and valuable; enhanced sometimes through dyeing or waxing

Special Characteristics

Distinctive brassy pyrite flecks and white calcite mottling creating a starry night appearance
