Scolecite
Scolecite · Mineral Specimen and Collector Mineral

Crystal System
Monoclinic; typically forming acicular, needle-like crystals, often radiating in sprays or columnar aggregates.
Mineral Group
Silicates, specifically Tectosilicates within the Zeolite group
Chemical Formula
CaAl2Si3O10·3H2O
Formation Process
Hydrothermal or low-temperature secondary alteration processes, typically crystallizing in cavities and vesicles of basaltic lavas from circulating warm mineral-rich waters.
About This Crystal
The specimen features delicate, acicular, needle-like crystals radiating outward in spray or fan-like aggregates, growing on or alongside larger prismatic zeolite matrix structures. The crystals are transparent to translucent with a vitreous to silky luster and a pale, whitish to colorless appearance.
Physical Characteristics
Color is typically white, colorless, or pinkish. Streak is white. Perfect cleavage in two directions parallel to the length of the crystal. Fracture is uneven. Specific gravity is approximately 2.2 to 2.3. Tenacity is brittle. Can exhibit weak fluorescence under UV light.
Optical Properties
Biaxial (-) with a low relief. Refractive indices range between approximately 1.512 and 1.519. Birefringence is weak to moderate.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Notable sources include India (especially the Deccan Traps in Maharashtra), Iceland, the USA, and Brazil. Forms mainly in cavities of basaltic volcanic rocks.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness of 5.5. Fragile and brittle due to its needle-like habit and distinct cleavage, making it unsuitable for everyday jewelry wear and requiring careful handling.
Care & Maintenance
Extremely sensitive to physical pressure, impacts, and thermal shock. Clean gently with a soft brush and lukewarm soapy water; avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and steam cleaning.
Rarity & Value
Uncommon to rare depending on the perfection and size of the radiating crystal spray matrix specimens. High-quality aesthetic specimens from India command moderate to high collector value.
Special Characteristics
Presents striking acicular crystal habits forming complex radiating sprays and fan formations. Exhibits pyroelectric and piezoelectric properties when heated or subjected to mechanical stress.
Lore & History
Popular in modern crystal healing circles for promoting inner peace, tranquility, and deep relaxation. Associated primarily with the third eye and crown chakras. These are traditional belief systems and hold no scientific validation.
