Tumbled Redwood Stone (Petrified Wood)
Silicified Wood (Quartz var. Chalcedony) · Organic Gemstone / Semi-Precious Fossil

Crystal System
Trigonal - Microcrystalline/Cryptocrystalline; occurs as a pseudomorph following the original organic structure of the wood.
Mineral Group
Silicates (Tectosilicate group)
Chemical Formula
SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide) with organic carbon and iron oxide inclusions
Formation Process
Permineralization (Sedimentary/Hydrothermal process); organic matter is replaced by silica-rich groundwater over millions of years under anaerobic conditions.
About This Crystal
Tumbled, smooth specimen displaying a deep reddish-brown to maroon base color. It features distinct linear, fibrous patterns and graining that mimics the original cellular structure of wood. Opaque with a vitreous to waxy luster.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Red-brown with white/cream streaks. Streak: White. Cleavage: None. Fracture: Conchoidal to splintery. Specific Gravity: 2.6–2.9. Non-fluorescent under UV light.
Optical Properties
Refractive Index: 1.544–1.553. Birefringence: 0.009. Singly refractive (aggregate). Opaque, showing no pleochroism or dispersion.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Western United States (specifically Arizona, Oregon, and Washington), Madagascar, and Indonesia.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 6.5–7. Excellent toughness and durability; highly suitable for jewelry and decorative use.
Care & Maintenance
Safe to clean with warm soapy water. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners if there are visible fractures. Generally stable but should be kept away from harsh acids.
Rarity & Value
Common. Value is determined by the preservation of wood grain detail, color vibrancy, and size. Generally inexpensive as a tumbled stone.
Special Characteristics
Pseudomorphism: The replacement of organic wood cells by quartz while retaining the original external and internal biological morphology.
Lore & History
Historically used as amulets by ancient Greeks and Romans. Metaphysically associated with grounding, patience, and connecting to 'ancient wisdom' and the Root Chakra.
