Silver Ore (with possible Quartz and Limonite)
Native Silver in a Silicate/Sulfide matrix · Mineral Specimen / Metallic Ore

Crystal System
Cubic (Isometric) for silver; Trigonal for quartz. Habit is typically dendritic, massive, or wire-like for silver.
Mineral Group
Native Elements (Silver), Silicates (Quartz), Oxides/Hydroxides (Limonite)
Chemical Formula
Ag (Native Silver), SiO2 (Quartz), FeO(OH)·nH2O (Limonite)
Formation Process
Primarily Hydrothermal. Often forms in veins through the precipitation of silver from hot, mineral-rich fluids at low to moderate temperatures.
About This Crystal
The specimen shows a dull, metallic grey to black matrix (likely sulfide-rich) with white/light-grey crusts of quartz or calcite. Patches of yellow-orange limonite staining indicate iron oxidation. Metallic flakes suggest argentiferous content.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Tin-white (tarnishes to grey/black), Streak: Silver-white, Cleavage: None, Fracture: Hackly, Specific Gravity: 10.1–11.1, Luster: Metallic.
Optical Properties
Opaque; highly reflective when untarnished. Non-pleochroic and isotropic (cubic system).
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Notable sources include Arizpe (Mexico), Freiberg (Germany), Kongsberg (Norway), and various mines in Ontario, Canada.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness: 2.5–3. High malleability and ductility, but very soft and easily scratched or dented.
Care & Maintenance
Avoid chemicals, especially sulfur-based compounds which cause tarnishing. Clean with distilled water and soft cloth; avoid ultrasonic cleaners if the matrix is porous.
Rarity & Value
Varies by silver content and crystal habit (dendritic or 'wire' forms are highly prized). Native silver specimens are relatively uncommon compared to ore minerals like Argentite.
Special Characteristics
Tarnishes readily to a dark patina. Some associated minerals may show fluorescence under UV light, though native silver itself does not.
Lore & History
Used since antiquity for currency, jewelry, and mirrors. Historically associated with the Moon. In folklore, it is believed to represent purity and clarity.
