Blue Agate (Dyed)

Silicon Dioxide var. Chalcedony · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Blue Agate (Dyed)

Crystal System

Trigonal (microcrystalline/cryptocrystalline); typically found in massive, botryoidal, or nodular habits.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate subgroup; Quartz group)

Chemical Formula

SiO2

Formation Process

Secondary formation via hydrothermal activity; silica-rich fluids deposit layers in volcanic rock cavities (vesicles) or sedimentary fissures at low temperatures.

About This Crystal

A tumbled, translucent to semi-opaque blue stone with a vitreous to waxy luster. It exhibits saturated blue color banding typical of dyed chalcedony, where pigments concentrate in porous layers.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Bright blue (artificial); Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal; Specific Gravity: 2.58–2.64; Tenacity: Brittle but tough due to interlocking structure.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.530–1.540; Birefringence: Up to 0.004; Typically singly refractive (aggregate); No notable pleochroism or dispersion.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Brazil, Uruguay, and India are primary sources for high-porosity agate suitable for dyeing.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 6.5–7. High durability and excellent wearability for jewelry; lacks cleavage making it resistant to chipping.

Care & Maintenance

Wash with warm soapy water. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or harsh chemicals (like bleach), as artificial dyes may fade or react. Avoid ultrasonic cleaning if dyed or fractured.

Rarity & Value

Very Common; inexpensive. Value as a decorative 'tumble stone' is low. Saturated blue colors in agate are almost always the result of chemical dyeing.

Special Characteristics

Banding patterns (concentric or parallel) are visible; the dye often highlights structural variations in the quartz micro-crystals.

Lore & History

Historically, agates were used in amulets in Ancient Egypt and Greece. Modern metaphysical belief associates blue agate with the throat chakra, calm communication, and serenity.
