Kambaba Jasper
Stromatolite Jasper (Rhyolitic volcanic rock) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Crystal System
Hexagonal (Trigonal) - Microcrystalline; habit in this specimen is polished heart-shaped massive form.
Mineral Group
Silicates (Tectosilicates / Chalcedony group)
Chemical Formula
SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide) with Ca, Fe, Mn, and fossilized cyanobacteria inclusions
Formation Process
Formed via sedimentary deposition of cyanobacteria (algae) which are later fossilized and agatized through silica replacement (metasomatism) or as a rhyolitic volcanic rock with orbicular structures.
About This Crystal
Opaque, dark forest green to black stone featuring distinctive orbicular (eye-like) patterns and swirling white or light green veins. Luster is vitreous to waxy when polished.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Deep green to black with white veins; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal; Specific Gravity: 2.6-2.65; Fluorescence: Generally inert.
Optical Properties
Opaque; Refractive Index: 1.544-1.553; No pleochroism or birefringence visible due to opacity.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Madagascar (chiefly the Bongolava region) and South Africa. Found in sedimentary and volcanic formations.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 6.5 to 7; High toughness; Excellent stability for jewelry and decorative use.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or prolonged exposure to high heat to prevent drying of the silica structure.
Rarity & Value
Common to Uncommon; Value is based on the clarity of the patterns and polish quality; generally very affordable.
Special Characteristics
Features fossilized stromatolite structures; may contain 'orbicular' patterns resembling eyes.
Lore & History
Considered one of the oldest fossils on Earth. Historically used as a stone of peace and stability. In metaphysical practices, it is associated with the Heart and Root Chakras, believed to provide grounding and emotional soothing.
