About This Crystal
An opaque, microcrystalline variety of quartz featuring a deep red 'blood' pattern (Piedmontite/Iron Oxides) mottled against a forest green or greyish-white matrix (Epidote/Quartz). It has a dull to vitreous luster when polished.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Red, green, white, and grey; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal to splintery; Specific Gravity: 2.6-2.9; Non-fluorescent.
Optical Properties
Refractive Index: 1.544-1.553; Birefringence: Weak (0.009); Opaque to sub-translucent; No pleochroism.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Primarily Western Australia (Tieman Range) and parts of South Africa
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 6.5 to 7.0; Toughness: Excellent due to microcrystalline structure; High stability against light and heat.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners if the stone has surface-reaching fractures. Store separately to avoid scratching softer gems.
Rarity & Value
Common; Value is determined by the vividness of the red patterns and contrast with the matrix. Usually sold as beads, cabochons, or carvings at affordable price points.
Special Characteristics
Displays distinct 'brecciated' or mottled appearance; sometimes shows subtle sparkling from quartz crystal pockets within the matrix.
