Dyed Agate

Chalcedony var. Agate (Cryptocrystalline Quartz) · Decorative Stone / Semi-Precious Gemstone

Dyed Agate

Crystal System

Trigonal/Hexagonal system (Microcrystalline); habit is typically nodules or massive with banding.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate group)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide) with artificial dye pigments

Formation Process

Hydrothermal/Sedimentary; forms in volcanic rock cavities or sedimentary rocks through silica deposition. The pink color is secondary (anthropogenic dyeing).

About This Crystal

Tumbled, polished stone showing a saturated neon/magenta pink color. Translucent to nearly opaque with a vitreous to waxy luster. Concentrated dye is visible in internal fractures and surface micro-pits.

Physical Characteristics

Pink body color, white streak (if natural), no cleavage, conchoidal fracture, 2.60–2.65 specific gravity, non-magnetic. May show bright pink fluorescence if reactive dyes were used.

Optical Properties

Refractive index of ~1.544; doubly refractive (aggregate). No natural pleochroism. The 'fire' is non-existent; primary feature is concentrated color zoning from dye.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Brazil and Uruguay are major sources for natural agate geode slices and nodules which are then dyed globally.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs hardness 6.5–7. Tough and durable for jewelry, though the dye may be sensitive to heat and chemicals.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water; avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaners as they may leach dye. Store away from direct sunlight to prevent bleaching of the artificial pigment.

Rarity & Value

Very common; low value. Price usually ranges from $1–$5 for tumbled stones. The intense color is a result of mass-produced chemical treatment.

Special Characteristics

Artificially enhanced color-saturation; features 'dye-traps' where dark magenta pigment pools in fissures and less permeable layers of the chalcedony.

Lore & History

Historically, Agates have been used for amulets since Neolithic times. In modern crystal healing, pink agate is associated with the heart chakra and emotional soothing, though many purists prefer untreated stones.
