About This Crystal

This is a tumbled specimen of lepidolite displaying a characteristic lilac-pink to purple coloration with mottled white quartz and reddish-orange iron oxide inclusions. It has a translucent to opaque appearance with a sub-vitreous to pearly luster typical of tumbled micas.

Physical Characteristics

Color ranges from lilac, pink, and purple to greyish-white. Streak is white. Perfect basal cleavage in one direction yielding flexible thin flakes. Fracture is uneven. Specific gravity is approximately 2.8 to 2.9. Tenacity is sectile and flexible in thin sheets.

Optical Properties

Biaxial (-) with refractive indices around nα = 1.530 - 1.545, nβ = 1.560 - 1.585, nγ = 1.565 - 1.590. Shows faint pleochroism in shades of pink and colorless.
