Rhodonite
Rhodonite (Manganese Silicate) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Crystal System
Triclinic; typically occurs in massive, granular, or compact habits when used for lapidary.
Mineral Group
Silicates (Inosilicates), Pyroxenoid group.
Chemical Formula
(Mn,Fe,Mg,Ca)SiO3
Formation Process
Metamorphism; typically forms in manganese-rich metamorphic rocks or via hydrothermal replacement and contact metamorphism.
About This Crystal
A pink to rose-red mineral characterized by darker dendritic or vein-like inclusions of black manganese oxides (such as pyrolusite). It has a vitreous to pearly luster and is usually opaque to translucent in massive form.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Pink to brownish-red with black veins; Streak: White; Cleavage: Perfect in two directions; Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven; Specific Gravity: 3.5–3.7; Tenacity: Brittle.
Optical Properties
Refractive Index: 1.716–1.752; Birefringence: 0.010–0.015; Pleochroism: Weak (red, pink, yellow-red); Non-fluorescent under UV light.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Notably from Russia (Ural Mountains), Australia (New South Wales), Sweden, Brazil, and the USA (New Jersey and Massachusetts).
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 5.5 to 6.5; Toughness: Fair to good (massive material is tougher than single crystals); Sensitivity: High heat and acids.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush; avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steam cleaning. Store away from harder gemstones like quartz or topaz to prevent scratching.
Rarity & Value
Common in massive form; rare as transparent crystals. Value is determined by color intensity and the aesthetic pattern of the black manganese veins. Generally affordable.
Special Characteristics
Features black dendritic manganese oxide inclusions which create a 'landscape' or 'spiderweb' aesthetic unique to each specimen.
Lore & History
Historically used in 19th-century Russia for decorative arts, including sarcophagi and vases. Conventionally associated with the heart chakra and emotional balance in crystal healing traditions.
